Himachal Pradesh Monsoon Toll: 380 Lives Lost Amid Heavy Rains and Landslides
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – The monsoon season has brought heartbreak to Himachal Pradesh, with heavy rains claiming 380 lives since June 20. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) shared this grim update on Friday, highlighting the devastating impact of landslides, flash floods, and road accidents across the state.
Out of these tragedies, 215 people died in rain-related disasters like landslides, flash floods, drownings, and collapsing houses. Another 165 lost their lives in road accidents on slippery, rain-soaked highways and mountain paths. It’s a stark reminder of how unpredictable the monsoon weather can be in this hilly region.
The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) released a detailed damage report that paints an even tougher picture. Over 447 people suffered injuries, while 1,520 houses were completely destroyed. Shops didn’t escape the fury either – 40 were wiped out, along with 28,958 livestock and 289 poultry birds. On top of that, 5,762 houses saw partial damage, and losses in agriculture and horticulture are piling up fast.
District-wise, Mandi tops the list for rain-related deaths with 37, closely followed by Kangra (33), Kullu (31), Shimla (22), and Chamba (21). Kinnaur reported 14 fatalities, many from landslides and house collapses that caught residents off guard.
When it comes to road accidents, Chamba saw 22 deaths, Mandi 24, while Shimla, Kangra, and Solan each recorded 19. These crashes often happen on treacherous mountain roads turned deadly by nonstop rain.
Mandi, Kangra, and Kullu bore the brunt of the infrastructure damage. Torrential downpours sparked massive landslides and flash floods, washing away homes, roads, bridges, and cutting off power and water supplies. The SDMA notes that the destruction is on an unprecedented scale, with ongoing restoration efforts in every district. But constant rain keeps making things worse, triggering more landslides and floods.
As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of more showers in the coming days, officials urge everyone – from locals to tourists – to stay alert. Avoid landslide-prone areas and riverbanks to keep safe during this Himachal Pradesh monsoon crisis.
