Kolkata, Dec 4 — The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken another Trinamool Congress activist into custody over the murder of BJP leader Vijay Krishna Bhuiyan in Moyna, East Midnapore district, a source told LatestNewsX on Thursday.
The suspect, identified as Buddhadeb Mondal, was found hiding at a relative’s house in Pingla, West Midnapore, after investigators received a confidential tip. Acting quickly, NIA officials raided the location and secured him. He was flown to Kolkata the following morning for further questioning.
The case dates back to the night of May 1, 2023, when Booth President Vijay Krishna allegedly vanished, as reported in a complaint filed by his wife Lakshmi Bhuiyan. Police began an inquiry, and a search operation eventually uncovered his mutilated body in a pond beside his home. Several Trinamool leaders and activists were suspected, and at least thirty‑four people were charged at Moyna police station.
Initially, eight individuals were arrested; five were later granted bail. Frustrated with the pace of the investigation, the BJP petitioned the court, claiming the police had not pursued the matter vigorously enough. The Calcutta High Court then transferred the case to the NIA.
During the early stages, the NIA carried out incident reconstruction and launched sweeping raids. About one‑hundred fifty officers split into fourteen teams, surveying the residences of all suspects. Most of the accused had fled, prompting the agency to seal their homes and issue summonses.
Earlier, the NIA had already detained several Trinamool figures linked to the case, including Amitabha alias Babu Bhanja, former vice‑president of the Moyna Block unit, and Sujit Kar, a former vice‑president of the Bakcha region unit. A later arrest targeted another worker, Nabakumar Mandal, from Bakcha Goramahal.
