Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 5 – With only four days left before the local body elections, the BJP slammed the ruling CPI(M)-led local administration over a kitchen‑bin distribution scheme, claiming widespread corruption and mismanagement. Party leaders say the Corporation sold no more than 5,000 bins, yet documents later show 60,000 claimed to have been delivered, a sharp “massive inflation of numbers” that could amount to crores in illicit gains. “The discrepancy is too large to be a clerical error. It is a deliberate act designed to siphon off public funds,” the BJP warned.
The BJP also decried the tender process that let a Coimbatore‑based company win the contract by sidestepping eligibility, quality and financial criteria. “Every guideline was ignored to favour a single company. This is a textbook case of tender manipulation,” the party alleged. Moreover, officials tied to the irregularities were allegedly put in charge of the internal probe, steering it away from a thorough investigation. “The inquiry was compromised from the very beginning,” the BJP leaders insisted.
Further, the party named senior CPI(M) figures for taking “crores of rupees” in kickbacks through staged road‑construction contracts, with paper progress while contractors and political intermediaries split the payoff. “This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a larger pattern of corruption in the Corporation,” they said.
State BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced that evidence – financial records and internal memos – will soon be released to substantiate the accusations, stating, “The people of Thiruvananthapuram deserve to know the full extent of the scam. We will reveal everything in the coming days.”
In the current council, the BJP holds the largest opposition block with 35 of the 100 wards, the Congress‑led UDF has only 10, while the ruling CPM coalition commands a 51‑ward majority.
