“If vote theft happens, it’s possible that people might take to streets”: SP chief Akhilesh Yadav warns of Nepal-like unrest in India

Akhilesh Yadav Warns Election Commission on Vote Theft, Cites Nepal Protests

In Lucknow, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav fired a strong warning to the Election Commission on Friday. He said any attempts at vote theft in India could spark massive public unrest, much like the ongoing Gen Z protests in neighboring Nepal.

Speaking at a press conference, Akhilesh didn’t name Nepal directly but made his point clear. "It’s the Election Commission’s job to make sure no vote gets stolen anywhere," he said. He added that if people can’t win through fair votes, they might try stopping them with force—like using revolvers. "If that happens here, folks could hit the streets, just like in our neighboring countries."

This comes amid growing concerns from the opposition INDIA bloc about vote chori, or vote theft, in Indian elections. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been leading the charge, claiming big-time electoral fraud during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He pointed to the Bangalore Central constituency in Karnataka, where he alleged over 1 lakh fake voters were added.

Rahul broke down the tricks: duplicate voter names, fake addresses, bulk registrations, invalid photos, and misuse of Form 6 for new enrollments. To fight back, Congress launched the Vote Chori campaign with a website (votechori.in) and a helpline number. They’re calling on people to push for clean, transparent voter rolls.

The INDIA bloc, which includes parties like Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party, fully supports this. They’re even planning events such as the Vote Adhikaar Yatra in Bihar, a state gearing up for elections soon.

The Election Commission hit back hard at Rahul’s claims, calling them false and misleading. They asked him to either give a sworn statement with proof or apologize. The EC explained that voter rolls are available in PDF format to protect privacy.

Akhilesh isn’t alone in drawing parallels to Nepal. Just two days earlier, on September 10, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut echoed similar fears. He talked about the anti-corruption protests in Nepal, warning that a "fire" against corruption, dictatorship, and nepotism could spread to India. But he said India stays peaceful thanks to Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent ideals.

"If this spark reaches India, remember—our country has survived because Gandhi was born here," Raut told . "People still follow his path, that’s why the Modi government is holding on. No matter how much you criticize Gandhi, your survival depends on his ideology."

Now, let’s look at what’s happening in Nepal. The Gen Z protests kicked off on September 8, 2025, in Kathmandu and cities like Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj. They erupted after the government banned major social media platforms over tax and cybersecurity worries. Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population reported on Friday that the death toll has hit 51. Of these, 30 died from gunshots, and 21 from burns, wounds, and other injuries.

On another note, Akhilesh slammed the agency that ranked Lucknow third in national cleanliness surveys. He called it a sham and demanded an FIR against them. "They’ve ruined Lucknow, Agra, Mathura, and Vrindavan—everything’s a mess," he said.

As election season heats up, these warnings highlight the opposition’s push for fair play in India’s democracy. Will the Election Commission step up? Stay tuned for more on vote theft allegations and Nepal protests.
