IndiGo has refunded Rs 610 crore to flyers so far for cancelled flights: Govt

IndiGo has already handed back roughly Rs 610 crore, after the government told the airline that all passenger refunds for flights that were cancelled or severely delayed must be completed by the end of Sunday. The ministry also banned extra charges for rescheduling affected trips and set up dedicated helplines to make sure refunds and re‑bookings go through smoothly.

The ministry said IndiGo’s performance is steadily improving, with the number of flights returning to near‑normal levels. On Friday there were 706 departures, which rose to 1,565 on Saturday and are expected to reach about 1,650 by Sunday’s close. Other domestic carriers are running on full capacity without issue.

Because recent cancellations had shifted demand and spiked tickets on some routes, the government imposed an immediate fare cap. The aim is to keep prices fair and affordable, and fares on affected routes have since eased. Airlines have been told to adhere strictly to the new limits.

IndiGo was also instructed to locate and return any misplaced baggage within 48 hours, with continuous updates to passengers. The airline has already tracked down and delivered about 3,000 pieces of luggage across the country by Saturday.

Airport directors from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Goa confirmed that terminals were operating normally on Sunday. Passenger flow at check‑in, security, and boarding areas remained smooth, and on‑site teams increased monitoring and rapid deployment of support from airport staff and the CISF.

“Our 24‑hour control centre stays on‑go as a central hub, managing flight operations, airport conditions, and passenger assistance. Calls from travellers are answered immediately, and our teams are still on the ground overseeing crew schedules and service standards to maintain full compliance,” the statement added.

The ministry emphasized that it has acted quickly to mitigate the impact of the recent IndiGo disruption, aiming to eliminate lingering inconvenience for passengers. As air travel nationwide stabilises, all corrective steps will remain active until full normalcy is achieved.

The ministry remains vigilant, monitoring the situation to uphold passenger rights and will issue further updates as needed.
