Suspended Trinamool leader Humayun Kabir backtracks, says he will stay on as Bharatpur MLA

On Sunday, Humayun Kabir, who had been suspended from the Trinamool Congress, surprised everyone by saying he would not step down as a Member of the Legislative Assembly after all. His reversal came just a few days after he had announced he’d quit his seat in Bharatpur, Murshidabad, on December 8.

Speaking to a group of reporters, the Bharatpur legislator explained his change of heart:
“I had announced that I will resign.”
He added that the voters who backed Yusuf Pathan for MP from Baharampur “cannot find him as he is never seen here. Many documents have to be signed. Therefore, people are telling me that I must not resign. They told me that they have elected me to work for their welfare. They will vote for me again if I work for them. Therefore, I will not resign for the people of Bharatpur.”**

Kabir’s flip‑flop followed the day after he laid a foundation stone for a mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad. That act had triggered his suspension by the party.

When Trinamool Congress issued a statement on Saturday, spokesperson Kunal Ghosh clarified that the party had not suspended Kabir for building a mosque, but rather for allegedly trying to spread religious fanaticism while staging a religious event.

Earlier, on December 4, Kabir had promised to resign on December 8 and launch a new political outfit on December 22. He said,
“I will be resigning as the MLA of Bharatpur either on Friday or on Monday. Thereafter, I will be announcing my new political party on December 22. My schedule on December 6 regarding laying the foundation stone of Babri Mosque at Beldanga in Murshidabad district will remain the same.”

The Trinamool Congress has repeatedly warned Kabir about anti‑party activities and embarrassing public statements. This time, the party formally and categorically announced his suspension.
