Protesters hurl icy snowballs at immigration agents trying to cuff man fleeing car crash outside Chicago

Federal immigration officers were on the hunt for a suspect who’d fled after a car accident near Chicago when a group of protesters in Elgin threw snowballs at them. Video posted on X shows the masked agents on the snowy streets of the suburb as the crowd shouted and then pelted them with icy projectiles. The federal team first warned the demonstrators, then fired tear‑gas canisters onto the lawns surrounding the area; frustrated protestors scooped up the devices and buried them in the snow to neutralize the effect. The altercation began when ICE personnel called local police for backup after a crash during an enforcement operation on Saturday morning. A suspected individual was involved in the collision and ran off, leading a nearby resident to call authorities who confirmed that federal agents were on the scene. Within a few hours, about thirty more emergency calls arrived, some claiming shots had been fired. Police later found no evidence of gunfire but confirmed that the federal agents had employed chemical irritants to disperse the mob. Seven people were treated for tear‑gas exposure and released on site. Social media posts indicated an arrest, though the Department of Homeland Security had not yet confirmed whether the suspect was taken. Elgin Police reiterated that, under the Illinois Trust Act, their officers are prohibited from aiding federal immigration enforcement. This clash follows months of intensified ICE activity in the Chicago area, part of the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” and coincides with new deployments of ICE agents to other U.S. cities, including New Orleans and Minneapolis.
