‘New horizons in India-China ties’: Indian envoy inaugurates new Chancery premises of Shanghai Consulate

On Sunday, December 7, India’s Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, and the Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, officially opened the new chancery of the Consulate General of India in Shanghai. The ceremony took place at the Dawning Centre in Changning district, marking the first relocation of the office in over thirty‑two years.
The new facility is larger and far more modern than its predecessor, situated in the heart of Shanghai’s consular district. It is intended to deepen ties between the two countries and to improve the services that the consulate offers to Indian citizens and visitors. The Shanghai mission posted the following on X:
> “New Beginnings, New Horizons in India‑China relations— Scaling New Heights as India opens New Consulate General. A landmark day as Ambassador Shri P.K. Rawat and CG Pratik Mathur inaugurated the new Chancery of CGI Shanghai—a larger, modern diplomatic platform in the heart of the city’s consular district, designed to deepen engagement and strengthen service delivery.”
In keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas,” the consulate’s move underscores India’s commitment to expanded cooperation. The opening attracted Consul Generals from thirty countries and members of the Indian diaspora. During the celebrations, Indian students, artists, singers, and dancers performed, highlighting the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.”
A highlight of the event was a tasting of Indian coffee, which the mission described as a showcase of “India’s distinguished origins—evocative, aromatic, and steadily gaining ground across China’s vibrant coffee landscape.” The mission also noted that the event “spotlighted commercial export potential of one of India’s finest offerings and products: Indian Coffee.” The soft‑power of India was further illustrated through vibrant cultural performances, echoing the rallying cries of “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.”
During the inauguration, Mathur expressed gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and Shanghai’s local authorities for their support. He reaffirmed the consulate’s pledge to continue providing seamless services to the Indian community and to its Chinese partners. He also pointed out that the Dawning Centre’s location in the Hongqiao–Gubei foreign business corridor—an area filled with diplomatic missions and multinational corporations—offers a strategic advantage. Its proximity to the Hongqiao transportation hub and the Gubei international community positions the consulate to expand engagement across East China.
Mathur also noted that the recent launch of direct flights between India and Shanghai will strengthen trade, travel, and business ties, making the new chancery’s increased capacity particularly timely.
