Blue state college student brags on video about celebrating Charlie Kirk’s murder

A student at Hamline University— a private college in St. Paul— was recorded by Turning Point USA members while they were hosting a campus event. The young person approached the group and asked, “Why shouldn’t I be glad that [Charlie Kirk] got shot? Like honestly?” after which the conversation turned to gun‑control. The student insisted he supports the Second Amendment but still was pleased that Kirk “got what he preached.” At one point he said, “Well yeah, but —” but was cut off by a Turning Point member who prompted him to clarify whether “stupid s—” were truly meant. He replied that he hadn’t called for gun violence, so he should not be shot “for stupid things he has said.” The student went on to explain that, in his view, Kirk’s remarks about violence and “empathy” were “the reason” for his demise. He said, “I’m just saying, I think it’s good Charlie Kirk got shot because he got what he preached. He said that violence is necessary. He said that empathy is a weakness. Why should I be empathetic to that?” While Kirk never claimed that empathy was a “weakness,” he did mention disliking the term in a 2022 podcast episode.

After the exchange, the student declared, “He got shot because he called for it. He said bring it on. I watched the video of him getting shot in the neck and I clapped.” A Turning Point student replied, “That’s so sad,” but the provocateur countered, “I don’t think it is yet. I think bad people deserve to die.” This sparked a brief debate in which the student accused President Donald Trump of being a fascist.

Across the country similar reactions surfaced in the days following Kirk’s September 10 death on the campus of Utah Valley University. At Clemson University, a student was caught mocking the commentator—who left a wife and two young children—while on campus. Around the same time, a Texas Tech University student disrupted a Kirk vigil and yelled, “F— y’all homie dead, he got shot in the head,” before being expelled. A Chicago public‑school teacher faced criticism for laughing off Kirk’s death during a “No Kings” protest in October, when he made a finger gun symbol aimed at his own neck and pulled a pretend trigger. Hamline University released a brief statement saying, “Hamline University does not condone violence in any form.”
