India’s agriculture sector sees remarkable growth under PM Modi: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

New Delhi: The Modi administration has driven impressive growth in farming, with sugarcane output jumping 44 percent since 2014, according to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Speaking at the “Agribusiness Summit 2025,” the minister called for broader farming systems on tiny plots—under a hectare—emphasising value‑adding activities, diversification into aquaculture and livestock, and tighter rules on bioproducts. He noted that the list of certified bio‑input producers has shrunk from 30,000 to just 8,000, urging balanced fertiliser use to safeguard soil health for future farmers.

NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand added that a focus on both utpadan and utpadakta is essential. He pointed out that Indian farmers labour hard but need to lift output per acre to keep pace with global demands.

“Drawing a comparison with China’s $5 trillion economy,” Chand remarked, “their farmers act as gardeners, innovators, and precise land managers, achieving higher yields through intensive practices—especially in fertiliser use—offering lessons we can adopt to reduce negative impacts while boosting benefits.”

RG Agarwal, chair of the agribusiness committee at PHDCCI, stressed that farmers have always supported the nation; now it’s time to reciprocate by providing the latest technology, knowledge, and assistance to lift their productivity and earnings.

Rahul Dhanuka, managing director of Dhanuka Agritech Limited, highlighted that India still records the world’s lowest use of agricultural chemicals, per FAO figures, and recent studies confirm further decreases, although misuse remains localized.

The summit opened with a strong focus on “Tripling the Agricultural GDP by Using New Technology and Quality Agri Inputs.” By gathering leaders from industry, policy, innovation, and the farming community, attendees aim to chart pathways for breakthrough technologies and high‑quality inputs that could transform productivity and sustainability across the sector.
