An upscale Los Angeles market has pulled out all the stops for the holidays, launching a wildly unconventional drink that marries a winter favorite with a wellness craze: a “Spicy Bone Broth Hot Chocolate.” The product debuts at Erewhon—often dubbed the city’s most eccentric celebrity‑centric grocer—and comes in a cup for $11. Members, however, can snag one free cup each month as part of their loyalty perks.
The hot chocolate is the brainchild of a partnership with FOND Regenerative, a company that touts the digestive‑boosting benefits of bone broth. The concoction leans on FOND’s beef‑ginger broth, spiced with cayenne pepper, coconut milk, maple syrup, cocoa powder, and cinnamon. While some patrons report enjoying it, others have described the flavor as “vomitous.”
One influencer named Ginger Gonzaga recently filmed a tongue‑in‑cheek Instagram clip where she poses as a Erewhon “influencer.” In the video, she holds an empty black to‑go cup and rants, “I know what you’re thinking. Bone broth plus cayenne pepper plus chocolate—sounds f‑king disgusting, and I’m here to tell you, you’re wrong.” She followed up by claiming the drink tastes “vomitous. It’s bile in a cup” before reminding viewers that it’s $11—or free for members.
At the Beverly Hills location, a fresh batch was rolled out around 2 p.m. that Tuesday when reporters stopped by. The cashier, who had sampled the drink, admitted it’s not for everyone and that many members simply opt for the standard hot cocoa.
If you can stomach it, the taste can be described as a mild chocolate base with a ginger kick and a spicy finish that lingers at the back of the palate.
The idea of bone‑broth‑infused hot chocolate goes beyond Erewhon; health and wellness enthusiasts across social media are experimenting with DIY versions in hopes of reaping the supposed health benefits—although the results range from disappointingly bland to pleasantly surprising.
The National Library of Medicine highlights that bone broth has been celebrated since ancient times for its alleged healing properties. The limited‑time Erewhon offering will remain available through the end of December.
