IPL 2026: Daniel Vettori wants to miss Ashes Test preparation to be in Abu Dhabi for auction

Mumbai, Dec 10 – The IPL 2026 auction is scheduled to go live in Abu Dhabi on December 16, so Australia’s assistant coach will be absent from the Ashes against England. He’ll be traveling to India to stay with his franchise for the auction.

Daniel Vettori, who also coaches Sunrisers Hyderabad, will skip the run‑through for the third Ashes Test in order to attend the auction. A Cricbuzz report said the former New Zealand skipper has asked Cricket Australia for permission to head to Abu Dhabi mid‑series.

Australia are a match ahead in the series, having won the second Test. The Aussie crowd will be watching the auction as well, with several current and former national players on the line.

Cameron Green is tipped to be the headline name in the auction, followed by Josh Inglis, Matthew Short, Cooper Connolly and Beau Webster.

BCCI released the 2026 Player Auction list on Tuesday, outlining a mini‑auction of 350 players that will take place on December 16 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

Out of 1,390 registered participants, 350 were selected for the auction. Of those, 240 are Indian – 224 of them uncapped – and 110 are overseas, 14 of whom are also first‑time entrants.

Teams will compete for 77 slots in total, with 31 earmarked for overseas talent.

Forty players hit the top‑tier base price of ₹2 crore, with Venkatesh Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi the only Indians at that level.

Previously, 173 players were retained by all franchises, including 49 overseas names. The auction purse totals ₹237.55 crore for the 77 available spots.
