Feds probe if tour bus driver in fatal crash was illegally issued NYS driver’s license: ‘It’s outrageous’

Transportation officials in Washington are investigating whether a Chinese national accused of causing a fatal pile‑up on a Tennessee highway was issued a New York State driver’s license under false pretenses.
Huang Yisong, 54, allegedly drove a tour bus early Tuesday morning while checking a video on his phone when the vehicle struck a tractor‑trailer. The impact triggered a chain‑reaction crash that killed a 31‑year‑old track driver and left about a dozen people injured, according to various reports.
The DOJ team is now questioning whether Yisong was even entitled to hold a commercial driver’s license in the first place.
“It’s outrageous,” a spokesperson for the US Department of Transportation told The Post. “This is exactly why President Trump and [Transportation] Secretary [Sean] Duffy have fought so hard to ensure every truck driver can read our road signs and speak English.”
“Our team is already investigating New York’s opaque licensing practices that enable dangerous, foreign drivers to kill innocent Americans,” the representative added.
According to WSMV-TV, the tractor‑trailer that collided with Yisong’s bus later hit another 18‑wheel truck, went into oncoming traffic on Interstate 40, and struck a Volkswagen Jetta before 6 a.m.
The truck driver and the Jetta’s occupants reportedly sustained only minor injuries, the source said.
Yisong was taken into custody by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, which declined to comment on the request for info, while the government has not yet confirmed his immigration status.
At the same time, a spokesperson for New York’s Department of Motor Vehicles stepped forward and refuted claims that the agency wrongly issued Yisong’s commercial license.
“Let’s be clear: Regulating commercial driver licenses is a federal responsibility,” the spokesperson said. “It is the height of hypocrisy for leaders in Washington to place blame at states for following federal rules. This individual presented New York State DMV with valid federal work authorization, including a Social Security Card, prior to receiving a CDL.”
