On December 12, the President, Droupadi Murmu, arrived in Manipur for a two‑day stay, planning to honour the state’s courageous women warriors during Friday’s 86th Nupi Lal Day celebration. She will tour the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal to pay tribute to the women who led landmark resistance movements against British rule in 1904 and 1939. These campaigns, collectively called Nupi Lal, remain potent symbols of Manipuri women’s leadership, bravery, and collective resolve.
After the ceremony in Imphal, President Murmu will head to Senapati district—an area largely inhabited by Naga people—to speak at a public gathering. There she will lay cornerstone stones for a number of development projects and open several initiatives designed to strengthen the district’s infrastructure and socioeconomic growth.
Since Wednesday, teams have been hard at work throughout Imphal to prepare for the high‑profile visit. The roughly seven‑kilometre stretch from Bir Tikendrajit International Airport to the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex has been cleaned, resurfaced, and festooned with flags, banners and other decorations. Along this corridor, sizable welcome signs have been installed to greet the President’s convoy.
This trip marks President Murmu’s second significant state visit to Manipur in the past three months. Earlier, on September 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state and underscored the central government’s commitment to strengthening Manipur as part of its Viksit Bharat vision. During that visit, Modi opened 17 new infrastructure schemes valued at ₹1,200 cr, such as Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, a new Civil Secretariat, a Police Headquarters, and the SEZ building in Mantripukhri. He also laid foundations for 19 additional projects, worth ₹7,300 cr, to address diverse developmental needs across several districts.
Through today’s journey, President Murmu is expected to highlight the legacy of Manipuri women’s resistance and reinforce the central government’s ongoing focus on development, unity, and restoring peace in the state.
