SIR in Bengal: Number of excludable voters high in constituencies of heavyweight Trinamool Ministers
Kolkata, Dec 12 – The detailed enumeration phase of West Bengal’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has wrapped up. In constituencies where the winning candidates belong to the ruling cabinet—most notably Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s seats—a large number of voters were found ineligible.
In contrast, constituencies represented by BJP members, including opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, had far fewer disqualifications.
For instance, 44,787 voters were ruled out in Bhabanipur, the seat held by Mamata Banerjee. In Kolkata Port, where Firhad Hakim—minister for municipal affairs and the city’s mayor—holds the seat, the figure rises to 63,730.
Behala (Paschim) in South 24 Parganas, represented by former education minister and Trinamool Congress secretary‑general Partha Chatterjee, saw 52,247 voters excluded, while Dum Dum Uttar registered 33,912, Dum Dum 33,862, and Tollygunge, home to finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, education minister Bratya Basu and power minister Aroop Biswas, had 35,309.
Suvendu Adhikari’s Nandigram seat in East Midnapore, where he won the 2021 Assembly election against Mamata Banerjee by under 2,000 votes, recorded only 10,599 disqualifications.
After that victory, Mamata Banerjee returned to office by winning the Bhabanipur by‑poll, securing a third consecutive term as chief minister.
Other constituencies also show significant numbers: Siliguri in Darjeeling, with BJP chief whip Shankar Ghosh, saw 31,181 voters disqualified; Balurghat in North Dinajpur, represented by former Union chief economic advisor Ashok Kumar Lahiri, had 11,219 excluded.
