In Lima on December 13, the Indian Embassy handed over a shipment of 250,000 saline bottles to Peru, underscoring India’s pledge to be a reliable development partner for the South American country. Ambassador Vishvas Sapkal presented the donation to the Ministry of Health, where senior officials such as Alberto Tejada Conroy (Director General, International Cooperation), Eric Vasquez Calderon (Joint Director, CENARES), and Abel Cardenas (Director, MFA) expressed their gratitude for India’s support.
This act of solidarity followed India’s transfer of 32 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Peru, which included the saline units. “Caring for each other as Global South partners — India dispatches 32 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to Peru. A consignment of 250,000 units of physiological saline solution will support patients suffering from dehydration in Peru,” the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X after the delivery.
India and Peru have long enjoyed friendly ties, with cooperation spanning health, energy, mining, textiles, agriculture, science, technology, defense, space, capacity building, and cultural exchange. The two nations also collaborate closely on multilateral issues, as noted by the MEA.
In 2023 India supplied 1,000 vials of human immunoglobulin to Peru’s health ministry in response to a rise in Guillain‑Barré Syndrome cases. Regular humanitarian assistance to Global South partners is a hallmark of India’s foreign aid policy. For example, last month India sent 10,000 doses of rabies vaccine and 2,000 vials of rabies immunoglobulin to Timor‑Leste, reinforcing its role as a trusted health partner and “First Responder” to the Global South.
“India has dispatched an urgent consignment of 10,000 doses of rabies vaccine and 2,000 vials of rabies immunoglobulin to Timor‑Leste, to assist in combating an outbreak. India remains committed to being a trusted health partner and reliable First Responder to the Global South,” the ministry posted on X.
