White House chief of staff Susie Wiles—68—touted in a recent interview with author Chris Whipple that President Trump “has an alcoholic’s personality” because he’s convinced “there’s nothing he can’t do.”
The remarks came in one of 11 conversations she gave during the first year of Trump’s second term, and excerpts were published by Vanity Fair on Tuesday.
The comments are bound to surprise many long‑time Trump supporters, given the president’s frequent claims that he never drinks. He often cites his older brother Fred, who passed away in 1981 at 42, as a cautionary example of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption.
Wiles also talked about a very different kind of work in July, telling The Post’s Miranda Devine how she helped her father, legendary NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall, enroll in alcohol rehabilitation in 1992.
She recalled that part of the treatment plan involved each of Summerall’s children writing a letter to him—a gesture that didn’t go unnoticed. “I didn’t really want to share the same name because he was acting in ways I didn’t respect,” Wiles said. “I don’t remember the exact words, but that’s essentially what I told him, and it caught his attention.”
Summerall, who died in 2013, was able to quit drinking after a stay at the Betty Ford Clinic. In the interview, Wiles noted how alcoholism can damage relationships, “and so it was with my dad and me.”
She added that, although “some clinical psychologist that knows one million times more than I do will dispute what I’m going to say,” she views herself as an expert on “big personalities,” particularly those of high‑functioning alcoholics whose demeanor can become exaggerated when they drink.
