Former Indian envoy calls Sushila Karki’s appointment as interim PM “stabilising influence” for Nepal

Nepal’s New Interim PM Sushila Karki: A Ray of Hope Amid Crisis

In a big move for Nepal’s shaky politics, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has stepped in as the country’s interim Prime Minister. This comes right after violent anti-corruption protests toppled the old government. Jayant Prasad, India’s former Ambassador to Nepal, is all praise for her appointment, calling it a smart choice to bring back stability.

"Nepal really needed someone steady to take charge," Prasad told . He highlighted Karki’s reputation as an independent and fair leader. "She’s the perfect pick to handle elections smoothly—unlike Bangladesh, where they’ve had a caretaker setup for over a year without any polls."

Prasad is confident Karki can guide Nepal through this tough transition. "I’m sure she’ll manage the next elections without a hitch," he said. He even pointed to history for proof: back in 2013, another Chief Justice stepped up after all parties agreed, and they pulled off successful elections. "That time, the Chief Justice grabbed the reins with everyone’s support and got the job done," Prasad recalled.

With Parliament dissolved, Nepal now eyes fresh elections on March 5, 2026. Prasad believes Karki’s leadership will rebuild trust in the political system. "It’s a dire situation right now, but her taking over will definitely stabilize things," he added.

Karki, Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice, got sworn in on Friday to lead a six-month interim government. The President’s office confirmed the Parliament’s dissolution in her first cabinet meeting at 11 pm that night. Their job? Steer the nation toward those upcoming polls.

As per the official statement: "Honourable President Shri Ram Chandra Poudel, on the recommendation of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Sushila Karki, has dissolved the current House of Representatives effective 11:00 PM on Friday, Bhadra 27, 2082 BS. The new House elections are set for Thursday, Falgun 21, 2082 BS (March 5, 2026)."

This Nepal political crisis update shows how Karki’s role could be a game-changer for the country’s future. Stay tuned for more on Nepal elections and regional stability.
