In Chandigarh, Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party leader Baljinder Singh Dhillon took charge as Chairman of the Punjab Agro Foodgrains Corporation Ltd on Friday. He promised to boost farming diversification, expand markets with better cold storage, and launch more food processing projects in the state.
Dhillon, who’s been with the organization for four years, shared his plans with right after stepping into the role. “Punjab thrives on agriculture, so we’ll push hard for diversification,” he said. “We’ll grow markets by setting up online cold storage systems and kick off new food processing units. Things are already moving in the right direction.”
The event saw AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora in attendance, adding weight to the new leadership.
This appointment hits at a tough time for Punjab farmers, who are battling heavy crop losses from recent floods. In Fazilka district, floodwaters from the Satluj River wrecked nearly 1,500 acres of paddy fields in villages like Dandi Kadam and Dhani Natha Singh in Jalalabad tehsil. Farmers told their entire harvests are gone, leaving them in distress.
While the government steps in with fodder for livestock and basic food supplies, farmers say they need more support. They’re also calling for compensation to fix homes damaged by the raging waters.
To help out, the Punjab government set up relief centers in Jalalabad. Local official Shanu, the Naib Tehsildar, assured everyone that aid is flowing smoothly. “Don’t panic— we’ve got this under control,” she added.
