Suspected Serial Killer Richard Fox Faces Third Murder Charge
A 62‑year‑old former handyman from Buffalo, New York, has been charged with a third murder, and investigators say there may be more victims.
Background on Fox
Richard Fox pleaded guilty to the 2003 murder of Cassandra Watson, a 40‑year‑old woman whose body was found in Portland, and to the 2021 killing of Marquita Mull, 50, whose remains were discovered near the Chautauqua Rails to Trails trail. For both crimes he received two consecutive 20‑year sentences, bringing his total to 40 years in state prison.
Fox has a long history of violent offenses. In 1993 he was convicted of a third‑degree rape of a 14‑year‑old girl and served 18 months to three years in prison. In 2005 he was found guilty of first‑degree attempted rape and aggravated sexual abuse of a 42‑year‑old Buffalo woman, resulting in a 15‑year sentence.
New Charge
On Monday, Niagara County prosecutors announced that Fox now faces charges for the murder of 32‑year‑old Crystal Curthoys, who was found dead in January 2023 in a boarded‑up space beneath a basement stairwell at the Niagara Falls home she had once shared with Fox. He is currently being held at the Niagara County Jail and is scheduled for arraignment on January 5.
Possibility of Additional Victims
Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone has described Fox as a “serial killer” and added that he “may be responsible for at least two or three more murders.” Quattrone told Syracuse.com: “I do believe there is other victims. We’re hopeful that Richard Fox will try to ease his conscience a little bit and give us some more information.”
Judge’s Remarks
When sentencing Fox for the two earlier murders, Judge Suzanne Maxwell Barnes called the defendant “pure evil,” stating: “I can honestly say you should never see the light of day. Evil. That is the one word that sums up this case.”
Next Steps
Fox remains in custody pending his upcoming court appearance, while law enforcement continues to investigate the possibility of additional victims.
