Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam kicked off his spiritual journey in India with visits to some of the country’s most sacred sites, highlighting the strong cultural and people-to-people bonds between India and Mauritius. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called these moments a true reflection of the deep civilizational ties that connect the two nations.
On Friday, Ramgoolam arrived at the newly built Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, where he sought blessings amid a warm welcome. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally accompanied him, embracing the Indian tradition of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’—treating guests like gods. Yogi greeted the Mauritian leader with flowers, a special souvenir, and a grand red-carpet reception. The air buzzed with spiritual energy as priests chanted mantras, performed Kalash-Aarti, and sounded drums and conch shells.
The MEA shared the highlights on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius sought blessings at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra in Ayodhya. A reflection of the deep civilisational and people-to-people links connecting India and Mauritius.”
Ramgoolam’s office echoed this sentiment on social media, noting how his temple visits in Uttar Pradesh showcase the shared cultural heritage. “From the sacred ghats of Kashi Vishwanath Mandir to the divine land of Ayodhya, Navin Ramgoolam’s spiritual path with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reflects eternal bonds of culture & belief,” they posted.
This wasn’t Ramgoolam’s first stop in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier on Thursday, he offered prayers at the iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. The MEA posted on X: “PM Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius offered prayers at the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi. A visit reflecting the deep cultural and civilisational bonds that unite India and Mauritius.”
That evening, he also witnessed the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti by the riverbanks in Varanasi. “This spiritual experience symbolises the timeless bonds of faith and tradition that bind India and Mauritius,” the MEA added.
Ramgoolam’s eight-day state visit to India began on Tuesday when he landed in Mumbai. On Thursday, he held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi. The leaders discussed boosting ties in key areas like infrastructure, healthcare, digital technology, energy, and maritime security, agreeing to take bilateral cooperation to new heights.
These visits not only strengthen diplomatic relations but also celebrate the shared roots of India and Mauritius, home to a large Indian-origin community.
