Bronx girl dies after being found unconscious at home — while neighbor claims dad ‘beat’ her

A 4‑year‑old girl from the Bronx died after being discovered unconscious in her apartment last Friday, and a neighbor has alleged that her father was physically abusing her.
Police were dispatched to the Barnes Avenue residence in Williamsbridge at about 9:15 a.m. after relatives found the child apparently unresponsive. She was immediately transported to Jacobi Medical Center, but the medical staff were unable to revive her.
A neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, claimed he heard the father striking the girl. He said, “Around 8 a.m. I heard him beating the baby and I heard the baby crying.” The neighbor added, “I had heard them before but not like that. I went to knock on the door. When I left the baby was still alive.” He later told reporters that “He’s the problem.”
The mother, who was wearing pajamas, and the father, who was in a bathrobe, were reached at their apartment on Saturday afternoon and declined to comment. The mother told reporters, “I don’t even know what happened.” She also said, “Let me grieve,” noting a bruise on her arm. She added that she had just celebrated her daughter’s birthday at Chuck E. Cheese and “now I don’t have my daughter anymore.”
The father remained silent during the briefing. The child has not yet been publicly identified, and an autopsy has been scheduled. Police are still investigating the case.
