Boulder cops ‘bear responsibility’ for compromising JonBenét Ramsey crime scene: Brother
Family Pleads for Justice in JonBenét Ramsey’s Unsolved Murder
In the 29 years since 6‑year‑old JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her family home in Boulder, Colorado, her older brother John Andrew Ramsey has taken a new stand against the police’s handling of the original investigation and has urged authorities to make a fresh push for answers.
When John Ramsey—who was at home that evening—found JonBenét’s body, he lifted the little girl and carried her to the second floor. Months later the family uncovered a ransom note, but the death was ruled a homicide. Her skull bore a fracture, and a garrote was wrapped around her neck, yet the killer remains at large.
Criticism of the Original Police Response
Shortly after the 29‑year anniversary, John Andrew said the BPD mishandled the crime scene by letting his dad go through the house himself. His mother, Patsey, had also found the note. “The police failed to control the scene and put my father in an unthinkable situation by having him search the house. They and they alone bear the responsibility,” he told The Post.
He added, “It was his house. It was his daughter. Any parent would react in the same way.”
Calls for a Renewed Investigation
John Anthony Ramsey, another brother who wasn’t at home when JonBenét’s body was discovered, praised the police’s renewed interest. “The statement by the BPD is way more significant than people realize,” he said. “After 29 years the cops are re‑interviewing people, collecting new evidence, and testing new items. They are literally going out and collecting DNA from potential suspects.”
He emphasized his belief that top‑tier DNA labs around the world are ready to help solve the case. “Put them to work!” he urged.
John Andrew echoed this optimism. “We are going to get this guy!” he told reporters. He also said that JonBenét’s father will never stop seeking justice: “He will fight until his last breath.”
Police Commitment and Modern DNA Tools
On December 12, Chief Stephen Redfearn of the Boulder Police Department released a video statement promising that the department is doing everything possible to crack the case. He noted advances in DNA testing that could open new doors.
“Exploring all options when it comes to evidence testing,” Redfearn said. The department continues to encourage anyone with leads to contact the detectives at BouldersMostWanted@bouldercolorado.gov or call the tip line at 303‑441‑1974.
As the family waits for closure, they remain hopeful that newer forensic methods and fresh investigative work will finally bring JonBenét Ramsey’s killer to justice.
