Madhuri Dixit explains how rising cinema ticket prices are affecting theatre footfalls

Madhuri Dixit Talks About How Rising Ticket Prices are Shifting Movie‑going Habits
Mumbai, Dec. 28 – Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit told IANS that while high‑quality films still attract crowds, the steady climb in ticket prices is forcing families to be more selective about which movies they see in theatres. She added that the ease of watching films on OTT platforms from home is also a big factor.
“Good movies will still run in theatres, but it’s not simply a matter of audience numbers,” Dixit said. “When families decide to go out, the cost of tickets matters a lot. They have to budget and think carefully about which film pays off the most.”
She noted that many people come home from work after 8 – 9 p.m., leaving little time or energy for a late‑night cinema visit, so the weekend is now the main period when people actually go to the box office. “OTT gives you the film right at your fingertips—you can watch it whenever you have a free hour. It’s cheaper, and you can build your own popcorn at home.”
Dixit added that she doesn’t see a hopeless future for cinema, only that the experience needs tweaking to make theatres more appealing. “If we improve the overall experience, it can still thrive alongside streaming.”
