Kolkata, Dec. 28 – An incident in West Bengal saw the son of a suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA arrested after an alleged assault on a security guard.
Police officers from the Shaktipur police station entered the residence of Bharatpur MLA and suspended TMC member Humayun Kabir in Murshidabad district. They detained Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kabir’s son, on suspicion of attacking the guard who was assigned to protect his father.
The altercation began earlier when a state police constable, responsible for Kabir’s guard duties, requested leave while a meeting was underway at Kabir’s office. Kabir’s refusal sparked a quarrel between the constable and the officer. At the same time, Azad – also known as Sohel – allegedly struck the guard, who then retaliated in return.
After the confrontation, the constable filed a formal complaint at the Shaktipur police station. Police responded by traveling to Kabir’s home; sources say he was not present at the time of the arrest.
Following the detainment, Kabir went to the Shaktipur police station to express his grievances and threatened to surround the office of the Murshidabad Superintendent of Police. In a statement, he said:
“Why did the security guard enter my office, and for what purpose? My son thrashed him and pushed him outside the office. The security guard also assaulted my son. He was asking for leave all of a sudden. But my question is, what was the need to enter my office for this? They (police) went to my house and detained my son. I am going to the Shaktipur police station to talk to the police.
The police should not act vindictively. I will wait. If the police do anything at my house, if they behave indecently with my son, wife, or daughter‑in‑law, I will announce within two hours that from 12 p.m. on Thursday, I will gherao the office and demand answers. I will bring Berhampur to a standstill. Let them try to stop me.”
A senior officer from the Murshidabad police department clarified that the constable did not actually request leave and that an investigation into the alleged assault is ongoing.
TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty pointed out that Kabir himself has admitted that his son assaulted the guard. He added:
“If someone assaults a police officer, the police will naturally take action. He cannot even keep his own party’s candidate in line, nor can he control his security guard.”
Kabir was previously suspended from the TMC for anti‑party activities. He has since founded the JUP party and intends to run in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Despite this, his son Ghulam remains affiliated with the TMC and serves as the chairman of the Public Works Committee for the Beldanga‑II Panchayat Samiti.
