India committed to finalise mutually beneficial FTA with European Union this year

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reaffirmed the country’s strong push for a fair and win-win free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) this year. Speaking after a key meeting in New Delhi, Goyal emphasized India’s commitment to wrapping up the deal soon to boost trade opportunities on both sides.

Goyal hosted EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic for the 13th round of India-EU FTA negotiations. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Goyal shared: “It was a pleasure hosting you for the 13th Round of India-EU FTA negotiations. We remain committed to working towards a balanced and mutually beneficial FTA soon, to unlock massive opportunities on both sides. Thank you for your visit. Looking forward to our continued dialogue.”

Sefcovic, who visited India for the third time this year, echoed the enthusiasm. He posted on X: “Maximising our efforts to wrap up in 2025. The auto sector should be at its core, boosting two-way trade via win-win tariff liberalisation.” At an event in the capital on Friday, Sefcovic called the ongoing talks a “ground-breaking” effort with unprecedented momentum. He highlighted that these India-EU FTA negotiations are the most intensive and constructive ever between the two partners, built on real trust and shared goals.

Unlike past attempts that fizzled out, this round shows serious progress, Sefcovic noted. The EU aims to finalize the FTA by the end of 2025, aligning with promises from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. He pointed out India’s rising role as a global economic powerhouse and how a solid EU-India economic partnership could supercharge growth for both—Europe’s tech and scale aiding India’s ambitions, and vice versa.

Goyal added that the agreement will create fresh pathways for Indian manufacturers to team up with European firms and global players. This could spark joint ventures, tech collaborations, and innovative projects, fueling India’s manufacturing boom and EU-India trade ties. With both sides ramping up efforts, the India-EU FTA looks set to transform bilateral relations and open doors for businesses everywhere.
