Tragic Drowning of Jadavpur University Student: What We Know So Far

A heartbreaking incident unfolded at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, where a third-year female student lost her life in a pond on campus. The initial post-mortem report confirms she died by drowning, but police are still piecing together the full story.

The student, who was pursuing English Literature, slipped into the water around 10 p.m. on Thursday evening. According to police sources, she was with friends near the pond, where they had been drinking alcohol. Her friends later told investigators they warned her not to enter the water since she couldn’t swim. But she went in anyway, thinking the pond wasn’t too deep. She quickly lost her balance and started drowning.

Her friends pulled her out and rushed her to nearby K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital with help from campus security guards. Sadly, doctors declared her dead on arrival. The autopsy found no signs of injury on her body, ruling out foul play for now.

Police aren’t stopping there. They’re waiting for the viscera report to check if alcohol, drugs, or any toxic substances played a role. "The real reason behind the drowning will become clear once we get that report," a senior officer told reporters. For now, the initial findings point straight to drowning as the cause of death.

This tragedy has sparked big questions at the university. At the time, a cultural programme by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI)—the student wing of CPI(M)—was going on nearby, even after 10 p.m. It stopped right away once news of the incident spread, but many are asking how such events get late-night approval on campus.

In response, Jadavpur University has ramped up security. A late Friday circular bans trespassing, morning or evening walks on campus, and the use of narcotics or alcohol. Now, everyone—students and outsiders—must show valid ID cards to enter. These steps aim to prevent similar accidents and keep the campus safer.

The Jadavpur University drowning case has left the community in shock, highlighting the need for better safety measures around campus ponds and late-night activities. As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the student’s family and ensuring student safety.
