PM Modi hails Northeast’s role in freedom struggle, recalls Bhupen Hazarika’s wartime songs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Guwahati on Saturday to celebrate the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary singer from Assam. During the event, filled with cultural performances and project unveilings, Modi praised the Northeast region’s huge role in India’s freedom struggle and national defense.
He highlighted how people from the Northeast made ultimate sacrifices for the country. “Countless heroes from this region fought bravely for our independence and protected our borders,” Modi said in his speech. His trip is part of a larger Northeast tour to spotlight the area’s rich cultural heritage and its key place in building modern India.
Modi talked about the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, which has brought back stories of the Northeast’s unsung freedom fighters and border defenders. He also mentioned events like the Asthalakhmi Mahotsav in Delhi, which showcased Assam and other northeastern states’ art and literature, helping them shine on the national stage.
Paying heartfelt tribute to Bhupen Hazarika, Modi remembered the singer’s impact beyond music. During the 1962 India-China war, Hazarika’s patriotic songs boosted the morale of soldiers and everyday people. “Those songs filled the nation with courage and energy, and that spirit lives on today,” Modi added.
Modi connected this cultural pride to today’s challenges, pointing to Operation Sindoor as proof of India’s strong stand against enemies. He said the patriotism, creativity, and zeal of Assam and the Northeast people keep inspiring the country as it builds a ‘New India’. “New India will never spare its enemies,” he declared firmly.
To honor Hazarika’s legacy, the government announced a museum dedicated to his vision, set to open within a year. Other projects will help preserve and spread his work, keeping Assam’s cultural heritage alive in India’s story.
