Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is buzzing with excitement about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s big visit to Numaligarh in Assam. On Saturday, Puri shared that PM Modi will kick off and lay the groundwork for projects worth over Rs 12,000 crore on Sunday. He called it a game-changer for Assam and the entire Northeast region.
Speaking at a press event in the lush Numaligarh Refinery Ltd township, Puri posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the electric atmosphere. “People here are thrilled and can’t wait for the PM’s arrival tomorrow,” he wrote. This visit highlights Modi’s strong commitment to boosting development in Assam and the Northeast.
One standout project is the Rs 5,000 crore second-generation bioethanol plant – the world’s first to use bamboo, which grows in abundance across the Northeast. Puri explained it’s a zero-waste setup that turns every bit of bamboo into valuable products like green furfural, green acetic acid for medicines and food, CO2, and even bio-coal. Plus, it generates 25 MW of green electricity, pushing India’s net zero goals and self-reliance under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Another key highlight is the Rs 7,000 crore polypropylene plant. This will cut India’s reliance on imported polypropylene by 20%, saving the country USD 85 million in foreign exchange each year. It also creates jobs worth 75,000 man-days annually, fueling local employment and economic growth.
Together, these initiatives place Assam at the heart of global green energy and petrochemicals, Puri added. “It’s all about PM Modi’s love for the Northeast and his drive for sustainable progress.”
The action doesn’t stop there. On September 14, PM Modi will launch and approve projects totaling over Rs 18,530 crore across Assam. In Darrang district, he’ll lay the foundation for the Darrang Medical College & Hospital, a GNM School, and a B.Sc. Nursing College to boost healthcare and medical education.
He’ll also greenlight the Guwahati Ring Road Project to ease traffic jams, improve city connectivity, and speed up travel around the capital. The Kuruwa-Narengi Bridge over the Brahmaputra River will connect communities, sparking socio-economic growth in the area.
Back in Golaghat’s Numaligarh, PM Modi will inaugurate the Assam Bioethanol Plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) to promote clean energy and cut fossil fuel dependence. He’ll also start the Polypropylene Plant at NRL, which will supercharge Assam’s petrochemical industry, create jobs, and drive regional development.
This visit promises a brighter future for Assam’s infrastructure, green energy push, and overall progress.
