10 Maoists surrender before Jharkhand DGP in Chaibasa, pledge to join mainstream

In a major boost to anti-Naxal efforts in Jharkhand, 10 members of the banned CPI (Maoist) group surrendered their arms on Thursday in West Singhbhum district. Officials shared the news from Ranchi, highlighting how this step forward comes amid ongoing operations to curb Maoist activities.

The group included six men and four women, all linked to squads led by top Maoist commanders Misir Besra, also known as Sagar, and Patiram Manjhi, alias Anal. Both leaders carry a Rs 1 crore bounty on their heads. The surrendered individuals are Rando Bordpai, Gardi Koda, Johan Purti, Nirso Sidu, Ghonor Devgam, Gaumeya Koda, Kera Koda, Kari Kayam, Savitri Gop, and Pradeep Singh.

They handed over their weapons directly to Director General of Police Anurag Gupta and other senior officers during a ceremony at the Chaibasa police lines. There, the former rebels promised to leave violence behind and reintegrate into society.

Jharkhand police credit this success to the state’s strong rehabilitation policy and relentless action in Naxal-affected areas. DGP Gupta welcomed them, calling Jharkhand’s surrender program one of the best in India. “We’re giving those who lay down arms a fresh start,” he said. “But anyone who keeps fighting will face tough consequences.” He added that police have solid intelligence on Maoist movements and remain committed to restoring peace.

The event drew key figures like CRPF Inspector General Saket Singh, IG Operations Dr. Michaelraj S., IG Special Task Force Anup Birthare, DIG Kolhan Anuranjan Kispotta, and Chaibasa Superintendent of Police Amit Renu.

This isn’t the first big surrender this month in Jharkhand’s fight against Naxals. On September 1, nine members of the outlawed Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP) turned themselves in at Latehar district. Four of them had Rs 5 lakh bounties, and the group surrendered a haul of weapons, including five AK-47 rifles.

Authorities aim to make Jharkhand completely Naxal-free by March 2026. So far in 2023, security forces have killed 31 Maoists in encounters across the state, showing their determination to end the long-running insurgency.
