Washington, Nov 15 – The White House says the new $100,000 fee for H‑1B visa applications is a strong move to curb abuse and protect American jobs. White‑House spokesman Taylor Rogers told that President Trump has “done more than any president in modern history” to tighten immigration and put U.S. workers first.
“We need the $100,000 payment to stop misuse of the H‑1B system and make sure American workers aren’t replaced by lower‑paid foreign labor,” Rogers said. She also highlighted the Department of Labor’s new “Project Firewall” enforcement initiative that will investigate companies flouting H‑1B rules.
The White House position comes after President Trump defended the visa program on Fox News’ Laura Ingraham. When asked if the administration would lower its priority for H‑1B visas, Trump replied that “you have to bring in talent.” He added that the U.S. still lacks certain skills for jobs like missile production and that the workforce must learn on the job.
The remarks sparked a heated debate. Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on X that she plans to introduce a bill to ban H‑1B visas in all sectors except medicine. She argues that ending the visa program would free up jobs and housing for Americans, but Immigration experts warn it could hurt the labor market and cut essential workers from healthcare.
The debate highlights a sharper tipping point on U.S. immigration policy. While the Trump administration pushes for stricter enforcement, Congressional attempts to slash H‑1B visas risk limiting skilled talent and straining the U.S. workforce.
