Dalai Lama congratulates Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal’s interim PM

Dalai Lama Congratulates Nepal’s First Woman Prime Minister Sushila Karki
In a heartwarming message, the Dalai Lama has extended his warm congratulations to Sushila Karki for becoming Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. The 73-year-old leader took oath late Friday, making history as the first woman to hold the top job in the Himalayan nation.
The Tibetan spiritual leader highlighted the deep bond between Nepal and Tibet. In a statement from his office, he said, "As you know, the Nepalese and Tibetan peoples have historically enjoyed a close relationship. I am very grateful to the government and the people of Nepal for providing facilities for the rehabilitation of Tibetan refugees following their forced escape from Tibet after 1959. Indeed, although the Tibetan community is relatively small, I believe it has been making a notable contribution towards Nepal’s economic growth."
He also praised Nepal’s progress, adding, "Over the years, there has been significant development and increasing prosperity in Nepal in all spheres of life. Such achievements are all the more meaningful when they really improve the lives of poor and needy people. I wish you every success in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of Nepal in these challenging times. With my prayers and good wishes."
Karki’s appointment comes after major unrest in Nepal. The government of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli collapsed amid fierce protests by Gen-Z activists on Monday. These young protesters hit the streets, demanding an end to Oli’s rule, and they rallied behind Karki’s name. Even though other non-political candidates were suggested, the activists’ support sealed her path to power.
The protests caused chaos, stranding several Indian pilgrims in Tibet’s Autonomous Region during the sacred Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Many had joined private tours through Nepal. Thankfully, border crossings reopened on Thursday, allowing the stranded Indians to continue their journey safely.
This milestone for Nepal’s women leaders and the Dalai Lama’s supportive words show a strong spirit of unity and hope amid tough times.
