Adani Power scores big in Madhya Pradesh with 1,600 MW thermal power project, using India’s first greenshoe option in such a tender. The company announced on Thursday that Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) has given it a Letter of Award (LoA) for this massive capacity boost.
This comes right after Adani Power’s win of an initial 800 MW in the same bidding process. Now, they’ve grabbed another 800 MW through the innovative greenshoe option – a first for thermal power tenders in India. Both units, each 800 MW, will come up in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. The company plans to commission them within 60 months from the start date, pumping in about Rs 21,000 crore for the plant and infrastructure.
The project promises a big jobs push too. It could create 9,000 to 10,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and around 2,000 once it’s up and running. Adani Power’s CEO, S.B. Khyalia, couldn’t hide his excitement. “We’re thrilled to secure not just the initial 800 MW but also the extra 800 MW under the greenshoe option,” he said. “This shows our strong commitment to delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable power to Madhya Pradesh. It deepens our partnership with the state and supports India’s energy security and growth.”
The good news? The additional 800 MW comes at the same low tariff of Rs 5.838 per kWh as the first batch. Adani Power will build and run the 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power unit under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model. They expect to sign the Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the state discom soon.
This marks Adani Power’s fifth major power supply order in the past year, pushing their total awarded capacity to 7,200 MW. As India’s top private thermal power generator, the company is already working on adding 23.72 GW of capacity. By 2031-32, this will take their overall generation to a whopping 41.87 GW, fueling the nation’s power needs.
