AI not static, regulation must match pace of tech advancement: Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a strong case for speedy AI regulations in India on Monday, warning that rules must match the lightning-fast pace of artificial intelligence advancements. Speaking at the launch of “AI for Viksit Bharat: The Opportunity for Accelerated Economic Growth” and the Frontier Tech Repository in New Delhi, organized by NITI Aayog, she described AI as a dynamic, ever-evolving technology that demands constant vigilance.

“Artificial Intelligence isn’t standing still—it’s racing ahead in real time,” Sitharaman said. “We can’t just rely on ethics alone. Regulations need to keep up with the technology’s speed, or we’ll fall behind.” She stressed that India has the talent and resources to harness AI for everyone’s benefit, but only if we guide it wisely.

Sitharaman pointed out that AI isn’t a pure blessing without challenges—it’s up to us to use it responsibly for the common good. “India knows how to take a good thing and make it work for all, keeping it under control,” she added. This approach, she believes, will help tackle everyday problems and boost the nation’s growth.

The minister highlighted AI’s huge potential in urban development. “AI can transform our cities by improving existing areas and planning new ones,” she explained. It offers “in-situ solutions,” meaning people won’t have to uproot their lives—instead, they get the fixes they’ve waited years for, right where they are. She urged rolling out AI-assisted tech across every district in India to make this a reality.

On the occasion, NITI Aayog kicked off two key initiatives under its Frontier Tech Hub to push India toward its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The AI for Viksit Bharat Roadmap and the Frontier Tech Repository will spark innovation, drive economic growth, and promote sustainable development nationwide. With these steps, India aims to lead in artificial intelligence while ensuring it serves the people.
