Bodycam images show Luigi Mangione’s McDonald’s arrest as defense challenges evidence collection

Photographs released in court documents shed light on the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the former UnitedHealthcare chief accused of planning a deadly shooting. The images—likely stills taken from body‑camera recordings—show Mangione seated alone in a McDonald’s, wearing a mask, later removing it while speaking to an officer, and then being handcuffed.

His defense counsel has asked a federal judge to exclude this material, claiming that officers unlawfully seized items from his backpack and interrogated him before they were required to give the Miranda warning.

A DOJ spokesperson countered that the backpack search was permissible based on safety concerns, and that prosecutors will only use a pre‑Miranda statement in which Mangione allegedly misidentified his name. The photos also depict several police officers surrounding him and taking him into custody.

Separately, 50‑year‑old Minnesota resident Brian Thompson was shot on a Manhattan street while en route to an investor conference. Surveillance footage captured a masked assailant approaching him from behind. Mangione supposedly fled the scene on a bicycle and boarded a bus to leave the city.

Five days after the shooting, patrons at the Altoona McDonald’s recognized Mangione from a wanted poster, called the police, and he was arrested on the premises. Officers claimed they recovered the murder weapon from his bag and found documents criticizing the health‑insurance industry.

While some supporters portray him as an anti‑capitalist crusader, prosecutors argue his stops at a Manhattan Starbucks and the Pennsylvania McDonald’s were key in his capture.

The Department of Justice maintains that Mangione planned the murder to ignite a public debate about healthcare. Prosecutors allege that Mangione traveled to New York specifically to find Thompson—whom he targeted with a 3‑D‑printed ghost gun and a suppressor.
