Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made a bold statement on Monday, saying Artificial Intelligence (AI) will totally transform every part of our lives. He urged India to lead the charge in developing and using AI technologies to stay ahead in the global race.
Vaishnaw shared these thoughts while launching the “AI for Viksit Bharat Roadmap: The Opportunity for Accelerated Economic Growth” and the NITI Frontier Tech Repository in New Delhi. He called AI the biggest tech revolution in recent decades, comparing its impact to how the internet reshaped everything.
“Over the last few decades, AI has become the game-changer among all technologies,” Vaishnaw said. “It touches almost everything we do—just like the internet changed how we work, live, and consume. That’s why India must be at the forefront of AI development.”
He pointed out that India is now dreaming big for a Viksit Bharat, or developed India, unlike the early years after independence. “Our growth today is inclusive, strong, and powered by technology,” he added.
Vaishnaw stressed that mastering key technologies is essential for any nation aiming to become developed. He listed critical areas like telecom technology, semiconductors, electric vehicles, biotech, complex engines, quantum computing, and rare earth materials. “We need to master these, adopt them, build talent, and stay on the cutting edge,” he said.
To achieve leadership, India will focus on two main pillars: ramping up research and development, and creating a deep pool of skilled talent. These goals are now baked into every major tech initiative, he explained.
As an example, Vaishnaw talked about the semiconductor mission launched in 2022. “The Prime Minister set a clear 20-year plan to build a strong ecosystem, with talent at its heart,” he noted. Today, 278 institutions, universities, and colleges train students using the latest semiconductor design tools. Students are even designing chips—20 of them got manufactured recently at the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, and another 15 are in the works right now.
Vaishnaw wrapped up by emphasizing that India’s push in AI, semiconductors, and other vital technologies will help it emerge as a global tech powerhouse in the coming years.
