Seoul, Oct 16 – Airbus has stepped up its pledge to deepen ties with South Korea, announcing plans for more industrial collaboration and joint projects that aim to grow the country’s aerospace and defense capabilities.
During a press briefing in Seoul before next week’s Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2025, Airbus Korea’s president, Lee Hee‑hwan, said the company wants to build on a 50‑year partnership that has been driven by innovation and quality. “South Korea is more than a customer – we’re a strategic partner in shaping the future of aerospace,” Lee said.
Airbus currently operates more than 160 commercial planes, 60 helicopters and 30 military transports in Korea. At ADEX, the firm will showcase the A350F freighter, H225M and ACH160 helicopters, and the A330 MRTT+ defence platform, among other products.
Lee highlighted Airbus’s close links with Korean buyers and suppliers such as Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Korean Air. Both companies help assemble key parts for worldwide Airbus projects.
The company also plans to open a research and training (R&T) centre in South Korea. An agreement with Seoul’s industry ministry signed last May is the first step, Lee said. “We’re still refining the details,” he added, promising an official announcement soon.
When asked about competition with Boeing, Lee pointed to a recent U.S. $36.2 billion deal by Korean Air for 103 Boeing jets. He noted that Airbus already has orders from Korean Air for A320 and A350 aircraft, and that those planes offer strong fuel‑efficiency and lower carbon emissions. “If we run those successfully, Airbus will keep growing in the Korean market,” he said.
The announcement comes as Korea looks to boost domestic aerospace skill‑sets and sustain growth in a rapidly evolving industry.
