New Delhi is gearing up to host the biggest para athletics event in its history—the World Para Athletics Championships 2025. This massive gathering will bring together over 2,500 athletes from more than 100 countries, showcasing incredible talent and the unbreakable spirit of para sports right here in India.
Leading India’s charge is Ekta Bhyan, the country’s top club thrower in the F51 category. She’s no stranger to the podium: Ekta grabbed gold at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, a bronze at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, another bronze at the 2023 Asian Para Games in China, and a shining gold at the Kobe 2024 edition. Her skills have made her one of the world’s best in club throwing, and now she’s training hard to smash her personal best and thrill the home crowd.
“This championship feels extra special because it’s on home soil—it gives athletes like me the boost to aim even higher,” Ekta shared in a statement from the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). “For the past few months, I’ve been laser-focused on my training: sharpening my technique, staying consistent, and pushing my limits to beat my own records. I’m ready to turn all that hard work into a medal for India.”
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports have been key players in making this possible. They’ve provided top-notch training facilities, funding, and expert guidance to help Indian para athletes shine on the global stage without any hurdles.
Competitions will unfold on a brand-new, state-of-the-art Mondo track and throwing arena at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. This advanced surface is built for peak performance, setting the scene for record-breaking throws, sprints, and jumps that could redefine para athletics.
Ekta’s story is truly inspiring. At just 18, a devastating car accident caused a cervical spinal cord injury, leading to quadriplegia and making her a wheelchair user for life. But instead of giving up, she turned it into a fresh start. She went back to school, aced the Haryana Civil Services exam in 2013, and built her financial independence.
Everything changed when she met Arjuna Awardee Amit Saroha, who introduced her to club throwing. In her debut national championships, she won a medal—and sport became her passion. Today, Ekta stands as one of India’s most reliable para athletes, channeling years of grit and triumphs into what could be her defining moment at the IndianOil World Para Athletics Championships 2025. It’s a powerful reminder of India’s rising power in para sports.
