TMC misinterpreting Calcutta HC order on withdrawal of protection from future FIRs: Bengal LoP

Kolkata, Oct 24 – Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, says the ruling Trinamool Congress is misreading a Calcutta High Court order that ended his protection from future FIRs.

Adhikari had been granted a temporary shield against starting new FIRs without court permission in December 2022 by a single‑judge bench led by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha. The bench’s latest decision, issued Friday, withdrew that protection. Justice Jay Sengupta explained that the temporary order could not be kept forever.

When Adhikari responded to the change, he noted that only the clause about future FIRs was highlighted. “Trinamool says this is a setback for me,” he said, “but the same bench already tossed 15 FIRs against me. The court now said that any remaining cases can be investigated by a joint special team with state police and CBI. So this order actually hurts them, not me.” He welcomed the ruling as a win.

Adhikari warned that the state police might register new FIRs. “Let them try,” he said. “I will fight every case in court.”
