Human skeletons unearthed in Bengal during house construction

On November 30, LatestNewsX reported that during a house‑construction dig in the Ashoknagar area of North 24 Parganas, people unearthed several human skeletons buried deep underground. Police said the foundations were being broken when the first skull appeared, sparking curiosity among locals who flocked to the spot and promptly notified authorities.

The incident took place near “Kalyangarh Bazar” under the jurisdiction of the Ashoknagar police station. Workers initially found two skulls, and as they kept digging more skeletons came to light. The area was immediately sealed off.

Officer‑in‑charge “Chintamani Naskar” and other police personnel arrived at the site shortly after the discovery. An initial assessment suggested the remains could be very old, but their exact age would only be determined once forensic experts examine the samples. The skeletons have now been sent to the lab for an autopsy.

Local resident Ashish Mukherjee told reporters that the land where the bodies were located belongs to his family. “I didn’t know anything about all this. Earlier, our uncle Bijan Mukherjee’s house was here. Today, the engineers called and showed us the skull and bones. It seems that the skeleton is very old,” he explained. He added that his family has lived in that part of Ashoknagar since before the country’s independence.

Mushumi, his wife, noted, “This house had been closed since the death of my uncle‑in‑law and his wife in 2013. Sometimes his daughters would come and stay. Now, after the land was divided, new houses were being built. That’s where the skulls and bones were found.”

“Trinamool’s” Ashoknagar MLA “Narayan Goswami” claimed the skeletons were found beneath the bedroom floor of a former CPI‑M house in Kalyangarh, ward 7 of Ashoknagar. He added that the Mukherjee family had once been a force in the area and that, in the 1980s, they were a dominant presence.

The MLA also recalled that a decomposed body had been recovered from a local water tank in 2002. “I don’t know how many more skeletons will turn up from Bijan’s property. These could be the bodies of Congress workers from back then – a history that could tarnish CPI‑M’s legacy,” he said.

No official response has been issued by the CPI‑M in reaction to the Trinamool’s allegations.
