Election Commission Hosts Workshop to Fight Misinformation and Boost Media Skills
In a key move to tackle fake news ahead of elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) held a one-day workshop in New Delhi on Friday. The event took place at Bharat Mandapam and focused on training media and communication officers from Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) across all 36 states and Union Territories.
A total of 51 Media Nodal Officers (MNOs) and Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs) joined the program. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar kicked things off, speaking alongside Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. They stressed how vital it is to fight misinformation, especially with rising threats online.
"India’s elections follow the Constitution to the letter," the leaders highlighted. They urged officers to share facts quickly and counter misleading info head-on. This approach helps keep voters informed and protects the integrity of the electoral process.
The workshop included hands-on sessions to build stronger communication in CEO offices. Participants learned how to share timely, accurate updates with media and stakeholders. A special focus was on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls—explaining it through media and social media angles to make voter registration clearer for everyone.
Experts also led a session on tools, techniques, and strategies to spot and stop misinformation. From fact-checking tips to social media best practices, the training equipped officers to handle challenges in the digital age.
This workshop is the third in a series. Earlier, ECI organized orientation programs for similar officers at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) on April 9 and June 5 this year. These events built on past learnings, pushing for coordinated efforts to deliver verified info to voters and avoid the spread of false narratives.
By emphasizing rule-based, factual communication, the Election Commission aims to ensure smooth, transparent elections. This step shows ECI’s commitment to a misinformation-free India, where every voter gets the real story.
