BITS Pilani Tackles Stray Dog Issues with Smart Safety Program
New Delhi [India], September 13: BITS Pilani, one of India’s top Institutes of Eminence, has made big strides in managing stray dogs on its campus. Over the last two years, the institute faced 282 dog bite incidents, so they launched a full-scale stray dog management program. This effort focuses on keeping students and staff safe while treating animals kindly.
The program brings together practical steps for peaceful living with strays. They’ve run major Animal Birth Control (ABC) and vaccination campaigns, sterilizing and vaccinating 144 dogs against rabies. Each dog also got a microchip for tracking. Partners like Help in Suffering in Jaipur helped make this happen. On campus, a shiny new 19,000 sq ft animal sanctuary now cares for injured or abandoned strays. It has medical setups and a team of vets to keep things running smoothly.
To make daily life better, BITS Pilani set up nine feeding zones for the dogs, easy ways to report bites or issues, and strict rules for cleanliness and safety. All campuses now follow India’s national guidelines plus the global Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, ensuring dogs get proper food, water, health care, and freedom from pain.
These changes are already paying off. Bite incidents have dropped, and the campus looks cleaner and safer. BITS Pilani stays open about its work—two government teams recently checked things out. The first surprise visit happened on September 3, 2025, from the Department of Animal Husbandry in Rajasthan. The second came on September 6, 2025, from the Jhunjhunu District Administration. Both teams sent secret reports to officials, giving the program a thumbs-up.
Stray dog problems are tough all over India, and BITS Pilani knows quick fixes don’t exist. They’re in it for the long haul, learning and tweaking as they go. The goal? A safe space for everyone on campus, with animals getting the respect they deserve.
