Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently praised India’s Blue Economy as a key driver for growth, blending prosperity, sustainability, and national power. In a post on X, he responded to Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, who detailed how ocean resources are fueling the country’s progress.
India boasts an impressive 11,098 km coastline and a massive 2.4 million square km Exclusive Economic Zone, positioning it perfectly to tap into a $100 billion Blue Economy opportunity. This sustainable push creates jobs, boosts coastal communities, safeguards marine ecosystems, and enhances India’s role in global maritime affairs.
Dr. Singh highlighted that India is entering “Blue Economy 2.0,” expanding beyond traditional sectors into high-potential areas like deep-sea exploration. The Deep Ocean Mission, for instance, uses the Matsya submersible to uncover strategic resources and develop cutting-edge technologies. Meanwhile, the Sagarmala Programme modernizes ports, making trade smoother and businesses more competitive.
For coastal folks, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is sparking a “Blue Revolution” in fisheries. Launched five years ago on September 10, 2020, this flagship scheme has turned India into the world’s second-largest fish producer. Fish production jumped to a record 195 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, up from 141.64 lakh tonnes in 2019-20, accounting for about 8% of global output.
Exports tell an even bigger success story: fisheries shipments rose from Rs 46,662.85 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 60,524.89 crore in 2023-24, solidifying India’s spot in the global seafood market. By December 2024, PMMSY generated 58 lakh jobs—beating its 55 lakh target—and empowered 99,018 women with Rs 4,061.96 crore in funding from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
The scheme supports women by covering up to 60% of project costs (up to Rs 1.5 crore per initiative) for activities like seaweed farming and eco-tourism. This not only opens new income sources but also gives them a stronger voice in communities. Overall, PMMSY tackles gaps in production, technology, and infrastructure to build an eco-friendly, profitable, and inclusive fisheries sector.
Modi emphasized that this vision empowers people while protecting the planet, driving innovation through initiatives like Harit Sagar Guidelines. As India leads in global ocean governance, the Blue Economy promises a brighter, greener future for all.
