India and Bhutan are taking a big step forward in their friendship with a new push for rail links between the two nations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared this exciting update on Monday during a joint press conference in New Delhi alongside Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Misri emphasized how strong the bond is between India and Bhutan. “We share a relationship built on real trust, respect, and understanding,” he said. These ties go deep, connected by shared culture, close people-to-people links, and common goals in development and security.
He pointed to high-level visits that show this closeness. Last March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled to Bhutan and received the Order of the Druk Yalpo, the country’s top civilian honor. Bhutan’s King and Prime Minister have also made regular trips to India. The King joined the Mahakumbh event earlier, and the Prime Minister attended the opening of a Bhutanese temple in Rajgir just weeks ago.
Misri highlighted India’s key role in Bhutan’s growth. India stands as Bhutan’s biggest source of development aid, helping modernize the country through better infrastructure and economic boosts. For Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan, running from 2024 to 2029, India pledged Rs 10,000 crores in support. This covers broad project aid, high-impact community initiatives, an economic stimulus program, and general grants—a full 100% jump from the previous plan’s funding.
The press conference focused on kicking off these new railway projects, strengthening India-Bhutan relations and boosting connectivity.
