Government Reopens PLI Scheme Window for ACs and LED Lights: Boost for Indian Manufacturing
The Indian government is giving a fresh chance to companies interested in making air conditioners (ACs) and LED lights right here in India. On Sunday, it announced the reopening of the application window for the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods. This move comes as the industry shows strong interest in pumping more money into local production.
If you’re a business eyeing this opportunity, mark your calendars. The online portal will accept applications from September 15, 2025, to October 14, 2025. After that, no more submissions—the commerce ministry has made it clear. This step aims to tap into the booming demand for these products and build confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities.
Why now? The scheme has already sparked a wave of local production for key AC and LED light components. Thanks to this growth, the government wants to encourage even more investments to strengthen the entire supply chain.
So far, the PLI scheme for white goods has picked 83 companies with a whopping committed investment of Rs 10,406 crore. Running from FY 2021-22 to FY 2028-29, the seven-year program has a total budget of Rs 6,238 crore. It’s all about rewarding companies that ramp up production and sales in India.
To keep things fair, both new players and existing ones can apply. Current beneficiaries can switch to higher investment levels or let their group companies join under different categories—as long as they meet the scheme’s rules in Para 5.6 and stick to the investment timelines in Appendix-1 or 1A.
One catch: Approved applicants in this fourth round get incentives only for the remaining time left in the scheme. Newbies or those moving from Group Performance-2 (up to March 2023) to a higher category can claim PLI for up to two years. If you’re from Group Performance-1 (up to March 2022) and upgrading, it’s just one year.
Don’t worry if you hit a snag—the ministry offers some flexibility. If existing companies can’t meet the new targets in a year, they can fall back on their original plan for claims. But this one-time breather is available only once during the entire scheme.
These investments promise big wins for India’s electronics sector. They’ll help produce everything from basic parts to advanced components for ACs and LED lights—many of which aren’t made in sufficient quantities here yet. It’s a smart push to make India a global hub for white goods manufacturing.
This update from the commerce ministry highlights how the PLI scheme is fueling self-reliance and job creation in the country. Stay tuned for more on government incentives and manufacturing news!
