Delhi-NCR’s AQI remains in ‘very poor’ range, six stations cross 400 mark

The everyday air in Delhi has become a health hazard.
At 6 a.m. today, the average Air Quality Index (AQI) for Delhi‑NCR was 360, a figure that puts the city in the “very poor” to “severe” category. Six pollution monitoring stations even recorded AQI levels above 400.

Why the smog is worsening

  • Stubble burning by farmers in Punjab and Haryana is a major source of smoke.
  • Stagnant weather keeps the pollutants trapped over the city.
  • Even routine construction works, such as drilling near court buildings, continue despite the hazardous conditions.

Supreme Court steps in

The Supreme Court will resume hearings on Monday concerning a public interest litigation (PIL) that tackles Delhi’s dangerous air pollution. The bench, headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, will examine:

  • The effectiveness of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
  • Detailed affidavits from Punjab and Haryana on measures taken to stop stubble burning.
  • Reports from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on enforcement.
  • Whether tougher penalties, including arrests, are needed to deter farmers from burning crop residue.

Earlier, the court listened to evidence showing that AQI levels had surpassed 450 at several locations in the NCR. Senior advocates urged the court to temporarily halt construction and other activities that worsen air quality. An amicus curiae also warned that the situation has become “very dangerous” and flagged inaccuracies in official pollution data.

Practical advice

If you live or work in Delhi:

  • Limit outdoor activities in the morning, when pollution peaks.
  • Keep windows closed and use air purifiers if possible.
  • Wear a mask that can filter fine particulate matter.

The Supreme Court’s action aims to push authorities to act swiftly to reduce smog, protect public health, and clear Delhi’s skies.
