Sydney, Nov 8 – Jos Hazlewood is in top form as Australia readies for the 2023‑24 Ashes, which kicks off on 21 November with the first Test at Optus Stadium, Perth.
At 295 Test wickets, the 34‑year‑old is chasing his 300th wicket in the opening match. With captain Pat Cummins out of the squad due to a stress fracture, Hazlewood will also carry the responsibility of leading the Australian pace attack.
“The best shape I’ve been in for a long time,” Hazlewood told reporters on Saturday. “I’ve felt a lot of confidence over the last four or five years. My numbers say it. Staying on the park since the pandemic was hard, but I’m ready.”
He shrugged off the English journalists’ jab at the Australian side, calling them “Dad’s Army” because of their senior lineup. Only 15 players were named for the Ashes, and just one, Cameron Green, is under 30.
Hazlewood said the team’s age problem is no longer an issue. “We bounce off each other out there. We know each other’s games so well and help each other when the rhythm’s off. We’re a tight group on and off the field, and that’s why we can pull each other up.”
With the series beginning soon, Australia hopes Hazlewood’s fast bowling and leadership will give them an edge over England.
