New Delhi — Coal India Limited (CIL) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT M) announced a partnership that aims to speed India’s clean‑energy future.
On Wednesday, the two organisations signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch the Centre for Sustainable Energy at IIT M.

The new centre will be a research hub where scientists and engineers work on cutting‑edge projects that turn coal use into a lower‑carbon solution. CIL, which finances the venture, said the focus will include:

* Repurposing old coal mines for new uses
* Developing low‑carbon technologies that can reduce emissions
* Turning coal into a valuable feedstock for clean‑energy projects

“This partnership shows our shared commitment to lead India’s energy transition through homegrown research and innovation,” a Coal Ministry spokesperson said.

CIL’s Chairman, Prasad Kamakoti, explained that the company is shifting from just a major energy provider to a key player in the nation’s clean‑energy journey. “The MoU is a historic step toward sustainable growth. Working with IIT M, we’ll create indigenous solutions that keep India’s energy secure while advancing decarbonization and social progress,” he added.

V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT M, highlighted that industry‑academia collaboration has long driven the institute’s success. He said the new partnership will help “develop scalable, impactful solutions that support India’s sustainable energy future.”

In addition to research, the centre will boost human capital by offering PhD, postdoctoral, and internship programs. These initiatives aim to train the next generation of researchers and engineers who will steer India’s green‑energy transformation.

The collaboration comes as India works toward its net‑zero goal by 2070 and aims to keep pace with global clean‑energy trends.
