New Delhi, Oct 23 – The Indian government says the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY‑NRLM) is a flagship program that keeps pushing poverty out of rural households and gives women in villages real economic power.
The Ministry of Rural Development runs DAY‑NRLM to help the poor find steady and varied work, from small‑scale farming to skilled wage jobs. It does this by bringing rural households together in Self‑Help Groups (SHGs), training them, and keeping the groups on track until their incomes rise.
Since the mission started in 2016, it has mobilised 10.05 million rural families into 90.9 thousand SHGs across India. The programme has also helped 4.6 million female farmers and 374 000 small businesses grow through entrepreneurship schemes.
Key highlights:
* 350 000 agricultural and livestock advisers (Krishi Sakhis & Pashu Sakhis) have been deployed.
* 6,000 integrated farming clusters now exist, offering farmers a broader income base.
* 195 000 producer groups tap into market opportunities, helping over 5 million rural women.
* 374 000 enterprises operate in 282 blocks, creating jobs and local income.
Women‑run SHGs have accessed ₹11 lakh crore in loans since 2013‑14, supported by 47,952 bank staff (Bank Sakhis) who link credit to the groups. The mission also pushes sustainable livelihoods through agriculture, forest products, livestock, and non‑farm businesses.
“We’ve turned DAY‑NRLM into a cornerstone of rural poverty relief and women’s empowerment,” the government said. “By widening formal credit, skills training, and market access, we are building financial resilience for millions of families.”
The programme’s strong monitoring, clear SHG‑bank partnerships, and capacity‑building workshops help keep the system transparent and accountable. This, in turn, fuels inclusive growth and improves living standards across India’s countryside.
DAY‑NRLM began in 2010 as the National Rural Livelihood Mission, replacing the old Swarnajayanti Grameen Swarojgar Yojana. It was renamed in 2016 to honour Deendayal Upadhyaya, and today it remains one of the world’s largest efforts to lift people out of poverty.
Beyond income, the mission works to empower women through awareness and behaviour change on topics like domestic violence, education, nutrition, sanitation, and health. Through these combined efforts, DAY‑NRLM aims to transform rural communities into thriving, self‑sufficient economies.
