People in Tripura’s capital, Agartala, will soon have more ways to fly. On Sunday evening the new Air India Express service to Bagdogra launches, and on October 28 IndiGo will start twice‑weekly flights to Silchar in southern Assam after a 30‑year break.
The Tripura Aviation Authority says the first flight leaves from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport. Bagdogra, close to the popular hill station of Darjeeling, is just 68 km from Siliguri and will give Agartala residents a quicker route to northern West Bengal. IndiGo’s Silchar service will run every Tuesday and Friday.
With these additions, Agartala now has direct flights to ten destinations across India: Kolkata, Delhi, Imphal, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Chennai, Bagdogra and Silchar. The airport currently handles 13–16 daily flights and moves roughly 4,000–5,000 passengers each day.
MBB Airport, the second busiest in the Northeast, opened a new terminal that can serve domestic and international passengers simultaneously. It is ranked 10th nationwide for customer satisfaction among Indian airports.
In a related move, Tripura’s Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the state will back a future Agartala–Chittagong flight for SpiceJet, with ₹15 crore earmarked for the project and ₹3.85 crore already paid as an advance. Police support is also being provided for the border’s immigration system. However, the launch remains on hold because of political tension in Bangladesh.
Historically, Agartala’s airport dates back to World II, built with help from the region’s royal family to support Allied troops. The site even endured two Japanese air raids in 1943. Today, it stands as a key gateway for travelers looking to explore the rich culture and growing tourism potential of Tripura and the wider Northeast.
